Can You Trust this FACE?

Apparently I don't learn lessons well.
I leave Calan alone for a few minutes with a magazine I'm reading & come back to find him tearing out articles.  Not ones that I have even read yet.

Tongue Twisters

Last night at about 1am Calan sat on our bed with his tongue out for many minutes.

We have no idea what he was doing or why he was doing it.

Babies.

update your style

This morning I had an appointment for an eye exam.
Cody & Calan did some man-shopping then joined me afterwards.
It's funny how drastic a change that a pair of spectacles can have.
So, what do you think -
are they him?

Nutcracker

The tryouts will soon be coming to town, with Christmas right around the corner, & practice here is in full swing.

I'm turning into a "stage mom."
Demanding he practice a few times a day.
Encouraging extravagant arm movements and foot work.
Making him start over every time he is a little off rhythm.
He must be the best if he wants to contribute to this family.

Euchre & Pugs

We spent Saturday evening -until Sunday morning- at the McFarland's.

Calan watched us play euchre, eat brownies & win (they have yet to beat us).

He played with pugs, Cody dropped him on his face *seriously* & he slept in the arms of a stranger.

I have to say, he is a go with the flow kind of kid.

Sweet & Sour

Snack time consisted of oranges & cantaloupe. We probably should have started with the oranges because the shock of sour after sweet crinkled his entire face.

Out & About

We got to go out to lunch this week.
Natalie gave us a $10 off coupon while we were on vacation with her & it was about to expire.
Thanks Nat!

My Baby Can't Read

but...

Cody brought home the complete DVD series of Your Baby Can READ that he got from a guy at work.  Sounds like guy talk at work isn't as crude as I had once thought it to be.
On the intro DVD it says to watch each DVD twice a day for 4-6 weeks or until your baby is understanding what the words are saying.  As of Monday we started showing it to Calan even though he is unable to even make sounds that sounds like words yet.  He's advanced for his age- like I've always said.  With any luck he'll be reading by 8 months or so. He is really into watching them.  I have been playing the 1st DVD on my laptop & he just sits on my lap & we watch it together.  Some of the pictures make him excited & when they said "toes" he grabbed his feet (a total coincidence I know, but I was super excited!).  So our days are already filling up with educational activities & at this rate he'll be able to skip kindergarden. :)

Plaid for '10-'11

This past weekend we went to Goshen to get Cito some summer clothes (craigslist).

I have never in my life seen so many miniature plaid shorts! Not even Old Navy or the Gap has as many plaid shorts as these people used to. :) We literally have enough for Calan to wear a pair a day for a month this summer & next (some are 18 months +).

So when you see him scooting around this summer in the same pair of shorts every day & think that I should do some laundry - just know that the chances are likely that he will grow out of his plaid shorts before he even gets the chance to wear them all even once!

Love is in the air

We spent Valentine's Day loving each other!
We watched a MOVIE.
We ate CHINESE take-out.
We ate CHOCOLATE.
And we LOVED every minute that we got
to spend together.

just because...

...he's so beautiful.

It's Chili out

Today is actually a beautiful day.  The sun is out & we went out for lunch at Chili's.  Calan kept making dust out of the chips & Ali joined us. She thought Cody should teach Calan to drink from a straw.  Of course, he should start drinking from a straw ~ he is 6 1/2 months now.

We missed the MEMO

More often than not people tell us to enjoy this age because once he starts walking he is into everything & once he starts talking he never stops.

Isn't that the point of having children?
Did we miss this memo?

It's like people that get a dog & then are irritated that it barks & digs.

We will continue to encourage Cito to be mobile and babble in hopes that one day we will get to chase him around & finally get to communicate with him in english.

Tuesdays with

Morrie Ali.

Calan braved the snow yesterday & went to Bremen to spend the afternoon/evening with Ali & her family.  He attended a birthday party (& brought his piece of cake home to his daddy),
watched fish,

slept,

watched fish

& slept.
It's so nice leaving him with someone that keeps his status updated.  It's almost as if he has his own twitter account.

a little pick-me-up

Calan is now lifting his arms straight out to be picked up.

We are now unable to walk by him when he is in his swing, jumper or playing on the floor.  If he sees someone leave the room he instantly starts to fuss & put his arms out to be picked up.

Graduated

Biter biscuits are on the scene.
Calan's Best Ali  told us about butter biscuits.
Mmm.
Sounds pretty tasty.
When we went grocery shopping today I was able to find them.
Bitter biscuits.
Weird.
Why would someone feed their baby bitter biscuits?
They are called BITER biscuits.
I get it.
Because the baby BITES them.
Maybe I am the one who needs to check my graduation status.

Heart attack

I've always loved even the idea of placing Calan in his laundry basket freshly packed with his warm clothes from the dryer & carrying him upstairs from the basement while his little hands hold him steady.  Not only does this get him off of my hip for a few minutes but it allows him to experience life from a different view.  We perform this scenario almost weekly.

After visiting the pediatrician & finding out that he weighs over 18 pounds (plus the basket, plus the clothes that are in the basket) I find this task taking its toll.  I have been sick *cough* but the second flight seemed extra long this time around.

Pretty soon he will be toddling  behind me but I will miss these days when he is still light enough to be "permanently" attached to my body.

As Predicted

I got off of work this morning.
Drove straight home.
Calan exchanged hands.
Cody went to class.

This scenario goes down in about 3 minutes every Wednesday morning. I'll get to spend another 25 minutes in the afternoon with him before he gets back into his car & leaves for work.  I don't get to see him again until tomorrow morning.  This makes me so sad sometimes.

After Cody left I finally washed the sippie & put warm water in it.
I put cold in at first but thought that the initial shock of cold and then water (which he has never had) would make him less interested in becoming a big boy.

It was instant.  He grabbed the rubber side grips & started chewing on the nipple.  The first big drink made him cough & his eyes turned red - like when he splashes himself in the bath.  He smashed his face against the top which made his face look bulldoggish and continued.  He loved it just as I had previously predicted.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CALAN!

Can you believe that Calan is already 1/2 today?  & it also falls on a national holiday!  It does make me laugh, however, that we take advice from Punxsutawney Phil a rodent.

I actually start back to work full time today & will only get to spend the early afternoon with him.  I've wrapped a sippie cup up so that we could have a celebration before Cody & I have to leave.

His Best Ali will be watching him on Tuesdays during the day while I'm at work. She is so excited & it will be good for him to be around kids in a different environment.  We couldn't ask for a better person to care for him.  I hear that she is taking him to church with her.

Oh BOY

This is going to be a LONG day!

Why do we have to live in America...

... where vaccinations are required?  Of course I'm completely kidding -but- shots SUCK!  This is 2010 & we have yet to figure out how to give babies vaccines orally.  Come on people.  Calan had 4 injections this morning at his 6 month check-up.

He is in the 50% for weight & head size but "off of the charts" for height.  A tall little weed he is.  Developmentally he is right on track
- exchanges objects from one hand to the other
- recognizes Cody & I
- "talks" using multiple syllables
- rolls over.

We are now to introduce the SiPPie CuP!  Dr. Davis says to fill with water & see what happens.  She told us that we are just getting him used to the idea & not to expect miracles.  I feel that he is way advanced & the sippie cup will just be child's play.
